Italy Battles Nearly 700 Wildfires in 2025

(MENAFN) Italy has battled nearly 700 wildfires from January to July 2025, which have scorched more than 320 square kilometers of territory, the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS) reported on Wednesday.

This figure already surpasses the total land affected by fires in all of 2024, when wildfires consumed 514 square kilometers, according to the ISS and as reported by an Italian news agency.

Gaetano Settimo, who leads the ISS’s National Study Group on Indoor Pollution, highlighted that Sicily bore the brunt of wildfire damage last year, with 175 square kilometers affected, followed by Calabria at 102 square kilometers.

“Although summer is typically the season when more fire events occur due to higher temperatures and increased human activity outdoors, in recent years the seasonality of wildfires is disappearing,” Settimo warned.

He attributed these shifting patterns largely to climate change.

“We are seeing increasingly irregular weather patterns, coupled with insufficient attention to land management and prevention measures,” he added.

Settimo emphasized the need for vigilance throughout the entire year, noting that the threat of wildfires has extended beyond the traditional summer season.

“The issue demands continued attention throughout the year,” he said.
